To develop and sustain a unique portfolio of translational research in neuroscience and mental health.

The mission of the Department of Brain Sciences is to develop and sustain a unique portfolio of translational research in neuroscience and mental health research. Our work drives scientific excellence, innovation in patient care, and the training of the next generation of leaders.

Underpinning this mission is a commitment to fostering the highest standards of scientific integrity and to maintaining a collegial, diverse and inclusive working environment.

The Department comprises three divisions:

  • Neurology鈥&苍诲补蝉丑; conducts ground-breaking laboratory research and translates it to the bedside for the benefit of patients.
  • Neuroscience鈥&苍诲补蝉丑; investigates the mechanisms of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation behind many neurological disorders. It is home to the鈥Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence鈥痑nd hosts the鈥Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Tissue Bank, a national collection of central nervous system (CNS) tissue samples donated by individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease and related neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative conditions.
  • Psychiatry鈥 – carries out pioneering research to improve the prevention, assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders, and includes the pioneering鈥Centre for Psychedelic Research.

Spanning all three divisions, the Department leads the multidisciplinary鈥UK Dementia Research Institute at 海角社区鈥痑nd the鈥UK DRI Care Research and Technology Centre at 海角社区.

We aim to nurture the next generation of scientists. We train postgraduates through a broad portfolio of study options, including the鈥MRes Experimental Neuroscience鈥痑苍诲鈥MSc Translational Neuroscience鈥痯rogrammes, while welcoming applications from talented PhD candidates from around the world.
